BISHAM DRIVE
At Howson Design, we take great pride in transforming dull and uninspiring spaces into vibrant and contemporary living areas. Recently, we had the opportunity to project manage a living room and extension project, completely revamping it from a dark and dreary space into a modern and inviting sanctuary. Our key focus was on utilising different materials and textures to create a truly unique and visually stunning environment.
The first step in this transformation was to address the lighting situation. Dark rooms can often feel cramped and uninviting, so we prioritised maximising natural light. This involved installing large windows and glass pocket doors to flood the space with sunlight during the day. To further enhance the light, we incorporated carefully placed artificial lighting fixtures that provided both functional and atmospheric illumination.
To create a contemporary living space, we emphasised the use of contrasting materials and textures. We opted for a combination of sleek, polished surfaces and warm, textured elements. For the flooring, we selected high-quality engineered wood with a light finish, which added a sense of warmth and sophistication to the space. This was complemented by a statement rug, introducing a tactile element and a pop of colour to the room.
In terms of walls, we utilised a neutral colour palette to create a clean and timeless backdrop. We introduced two feature walls a venetian plaster technique of concrete and liquid metal adding depth and interest to the room. This unexpected texture served as a focal point and added a touch of luxury.
Furniture selection was crucial in achieving the desired contemporary aesthetic. We chose pieces with clean lines and a minimalist design, featuring sleek metal accents and luxurious upholstery. To create a sense of cohesion, we incorporated carefully selected accessories and soft furnishings that echoed the color scheme and textures found throughout the space.
The extension project provided an opportunity to expand the living room and create a seamless transition between the indoor and outdoor spaces. We utilised glass sliding doors that opened up to a well-designed patio area, blurring the boundaries between the interior and exterior. This connection to nature not only allowed for an increase in natural light but also provided a refreshing and spacious feel.
Overall, our project management approach focused on transforming a dark and uninspiring living room into a contemporary and inviting space. By skillfully combining different materials and textures, we were able to breathe new life into the area, creating a unique and visually stunning environment. The use of natural light, contrasting surfaces, and carefully selected furniture resulted in a living room and extension that is beautiful, functional, and designed to stand the test of time.
