When Howson Design was approached by their clients to redesign and renovate downstairs living spaces to create a contemporary, homely feel full of personality, its lead designer Katy Raywood rose to the challenge.

Starting with the kitchen/diner open plan space, Howson Design redefined the key zones by moving the dining area, which features the stunning geometric Amtico Signature flooring. Mimicking the circularity of the area, the round dining table from OKA and the lighting pendant by BTC Lighting add interest and personality to the space.

Moving across to the other side, the new Howdens Elmbridge Porcelain/Navy kitchen features splashbacks by Rough Old Glass which work in harmony with the Nkuku pendants above the kitchen island. To complete the look small luxury details and touches were brought in in form of kitchen handles and knobs sourced at Armac Martin.

Next room that needed attention was the new snug/office/library room previously under-utilised and unused. The idea was to create a dual working space for mother and daughter, doubling as a beautiful space to relax and read. The starting point in this room was the pair of 1950’s Kozella & Kropacek chairs sourced and re-upholstered by the talented Dream-tiques, a small independent woman named Karen, who is highly educated in vintage furniture. To bring in some character they were re-uphostered in the beautiful and vibrant Susi Bellamy  Teal Bouquet velvet fabric.

Using the colour palette in the fabric, Howson Design sourced the blue sofa from sofa.com. All bespoke joinery was painted in COAT’s Adulting, featuring luxurious handles from Armac Martin. The vintage style Zara Home rug and brass and glass chandelier by Pooky give the space personality and style.

For the main living room the clients wanted to create a more grown up space with a wood burner. The focal point of this larger space is the oversized statement light by J Adams & Co. The Cuddlemuffin corner sofa from LOAF adds cosiness and comfort. Pattern and colour were brought in through the ROMO Tambara Hummingbird multi-coloured jacquard weave fabric that features a stepped chevron design with a beautiful movement and fluidity.

The media unit was sourced at Bo Concept, complementing the geometric ash driftwood Caracole Boxcar coffee table. Finally, the modern Seaweed Rug Multi rug from Heals brings in organic scale and calming colour tones.

For turning an uninspiring small WC into a wow factor cloakroom, Howson Design chose the immersive Timorous Beatles Jellyfish foil wallpaper. The fluted panelling from Naturewall introduces intriguing dimensions and personality into the small space too. This is further also reflected in the wave design of the concrete sink from KAST and the golden mirror from Oliver Bonas. Stylish brushed brass accessories and tap were sourced at Coalbrook.

Katy concludes: “The clients were fantastic as they took my guidance and followed all my suggestions and trusted me throughout hence why I believe the end result was so successful.”
